IMED Valencia brings together top experts in da Vinci robotic surgery

Press Releases | 13 de Marzo de 2018

Valencia, - 13-03-18. IMED Valencia hold the I Meeting of da Vinci Robotic Surgery – Approach to urology-. The objective of this meeting was the disclosure and training about robotic surgery advances on the urology area with the surgical system da Vinci. The robot da Vinci Xi installed in IMED Valencia, nearly a year ago and that was an investment for the hospital group of 2,5 million Euros, is considered the most sophisticated an innovating technology of minimally invasive surgery available nowadays in the world.

The scientific meeting brought together in IMED Valencia outstanding professionals of the national area, among them Dr. Emilio López Alcina, Manager of the Urology Service of the HGUV, Clinical Manager of Uroavanz and of the Urology Service of IMED Valencia; Dr. Asier Leibar, from the Uro-Oncology Unit and laparoscopy of the University Hospital Infanta Sofía; Dr. José Gregorio Pereira, Manager of the Laparoscopy Robotic surgery Unit of Zorrotzaurre and Head of service of the Hospital of Gadalkao-Usánsolo or Dr. Mikel Gamarra, Associate of the Laparoscopy Robotic Surgery Unit of Zorrrotzaurre, among others.

In order to provide a full training to the assistants, the meeting had a theoretical-scientific part and another practical one in which they could make simulations with the surgical robot da Vinci Xi installed in the hospital.

More surgical accuracy, risks reduction and better patient’s recovery

On this context, Dr. Leibar exposed its vision about robotic surgery in terms of its approach to prostate cancer in Spain and he pointed out that “the situation nowadays in robotic surgery of prostate cancer in Spain is encouraging. There is a remarkable evolution in prostate cancer performed with da Vinci robot in Spain, and as well of the installed platforms in our hospitals. Radical prostatectomy is the most performed surgery in the world with da Vinci robot. Because of its non negligible cost, something that is not exclusive of the robotic surgery, but of the medical technology in general, there was some reluctance in acquiring this kind of equipment, that little by little expand all over the world.

The da Vinci robot allows a biggest access to minimally invasive surgery, and improves the results of those surgeons that employ this approach, making easier the conservation of anatomical structures that surrounds the prostate and that are important on the recovery”.

Dr. José Gregorio Pereira, exposed the advantages of robotic surgery in biased nephrectomy and highlighted that “is more and more frequent to diagnose small kidney tumours due to the increased  awareness of the population in having medical check-up. The opportunity of early diagnosis gives us the possibility of making a conservative surgery, removing the tumour and preserving the rest of the kidney.” And pointed out that the biased assisted Nephrectomy by the robot “allows to perform this surgery with more accuracy, less time without vascularization of the kidney, so the reparation of the renal fault is faster, with less complications (bleeding, urinary fistula) and short hospital stay.” Similarly, “renal tumours that are more complex and finally need a full kidney removal, with the approach of da Vinci Robotic System, as well with the 3D magnified vision, more instrument mobility in small places, the technical opportunities of vascular and anatomic identification that offer more technical advantages, will have the opportunity of being removed in a conservative way.”

Dr. Mikel Gamarra explained the advantages of reconstruction robotic surgery. “In reconstruction surgery is where we can value the advantages that robotic surgery offers, because we can have benefit of contributions, as amplified 3D vision, movement versatility or having a comfortable position, when we have to face the most complicated steps of the surgery (stitches, fine and delicate dissection) that are the most difficult for the surgeon, and that appear on the moment of fatigue of the procedure”.

Finally, Dr. Emilio López Alcina pointed out that “one of the main pillars of IMED hospitals is the scientific and forefront medicine practice, having as differential value the human factor, together with the technology and innovating factor bet. On this surrounding the implementation of the Robotic Surgery Program in urology, strengthen and consolidate this strategic strand”.

IMED Hospitals is a reference in private health in the Valencian Community thanks to the union of the human factor and the most advanced technology, as it is the case of the surgical system of robotic surgery da Vinci. Nowadays the group have 3 general hospitals (Benidorm, Elche and Valencia) and 2 polyclinics (Teulada and Torrevieja).
