IMED Virgen de la Fuensanta has performed the first robotic digestive surgery in the private healthcare sector of the Region of Murcia, marking a new clinical and technological milestone that reinforces the hospital’s commitment to surgical innovation and the introduction of highly complex procedures using state-of-the-art technology.

The procedure was carried out by Dr Víctor López López, a specialist in hepatopancreatobiliary and robotic surgery, with the participation of Dr José Cutillas Abellán and Dr Ramón José Lirón Ruiz, Head of the General and Digestive Surgery Department at IMED Virgen de la Fuensanta. This operation also represents the first robotic digestive surgery performed within IMED Hospitales

The patient was a 77-year-old man diagnosed with a hepatocellular carcinoma measuring approximately eight centimetres in diameter, located in segments V and VI of the right hepatic lobe. Following a comprehensive diagnostic assessment and the necessary complementary tests, the multidisciplinary team determined that robotic surgery was the most appropriate approach for tumour resection.

According to Dr Ramón José Lirón Ruiz, “This procedure represents the first robotic digestive surgery performed in the private healthcare sector of the Region of Murcia and also the first of its kind within IMED. It is a highly complex operation that allows us to take full advantage of the benefits offered by robotic surgery in terms of surgical precision and patient safety.”
